Three SVSC Teams Win Gold At Edinboro

Steel Valley Soccer Club completed a successful run at the 2022 PA West Open Cup, which is held annually at Edinboro University.  SVSC teams won three championships.

Mark Perhacs' team repeated as the U20 Boys Silver Division with a 4-1 win over Tri-City.  In group play, the U20B tied Tri-City 2-2, beat Freeport (last year's finalist) 2-0, and beat JK united from Steubenville, OH 4-1.

Bill Abraham's team won the U20 Girls Bronze Division with a 5-0 win over Norwin.  The girls went undefeated in group play, beating WCYSA-California 16-0, Norwin 6-2 and Brookline 5-0.

Mark Rhodehamel's team won the U1l Girls Bronze Division with a penalty kick victory over Chartiers Valley.  The U11G team started group play with a 4-2 win over CharVal.  Gianni Tozzi moved to midfield from defense in the second half, and scored two goals to lead the way.  Mila Gibbs and Giuliana Rhodehamel each added a goal, while Brooklyn Hruska neutralized CharVal's counterattack defensively in the second half.  The girls then took out Kinzua, 5-1, behind two goals by Mila Gibbs and one goal each by Giuliana Rhodehamel, Nola Pruden and Ruby McCoy.  SVSC completed group play with a perfect record after a hard-fought 1-0 win over West Mifflin.  Nola Pruden scored the matchwinner and Ella Collins earned the shutout in goal.  In the championship game, CharVal took a 1-0 lead into half, but Steel Valley scored a late equalizer in the second half off of long-range effort from Ruby McCoy.  No one scored in overtime, thus requiring penalty kicks to decide the winner.  Steel Valley triumphed 3-1, with Alyssa Smaglo, Brooklyn Hruska and Nola Pruden converting their kicks from the mark.  Ella Collins saved two CharVal PK's to cement SVSC's edge.

Two other SVSC teams advanced deep into the tournament, with Levi Logan's boys losing a hard-fought match to Butler, 2-1, in the U11 Boys Bronze final; and Jim Bulger's girls won their group and advanced to the U14 Girls Bronze semi-finals before falling 2-1 to Carlynton.  Congratulations to all our teams!
